I’ve been looking for a good set of strings for my electric bass – something that would take away the buzzing sound I’ve had in the strings I was using on it. I had to find a good set of strings that are easy on my fingers and really make a mellow, solid sound. I love a more jazz-blues tone, nothing too bright and bouncy.

For bass guitar strings, the GHS strings are easily among the best I’ve ever used, they produce a very good tone quality overall, the buzzing is quite minimal from what I expected, especially for the price. It’s a reasonably good bargain – that’s why I bought these guitar strings, and have been very impressed with how well they work for me. I know bass guitar strings vary greatly from brand to brand, but these are a very good option compared to many of the other brands being sold, usually for much more money.

I’m not a big fan of a heavy metallic sound from my electric bass, strings need to be a bit less harsh and the smooth, easy tone has maintained well even after breaking in the strings. I’m pretty picky when it comes to finding just the right electric bass strings, and finding these GHS strings was more luck than research. I just ordered a few sets and this one was my favorite by far.

I’ve found the tone works well for my kind of playing and offers me a little versatility from jazz to a little folksy blues kind of tone, it’s been a very good fit for me. Not the best fit if you like a bright, twang or a crisp metallic sound, this is more for the person who enjoys the smoother sounds that a really good electric bass player can produce.

You don’t have to have really deep pockets to afford these GHS strings, which is a huge bonus for me, I like to switch up my strings fairly often, but I think I have finally found just the right electric bass strings. This is a good fit for me – the intermediate musician who plays for fun and does the occasional gig with some friends at a local bar or festival, sometimes even do a wedding or two. The Baby Taylor guitar is an exquisite guitar, which really brings out Taylor Guitars attention to detail and craftsmanship that we all have known about and cared for throughout the years. They certainly cut no corners in the crafting of the Baby Taylor, a smaller version of their famous full sized acoustic.

Taylor has been around for a long time and has done some great things, being one of the leading companies in the world when it comes to making premium quality acoustic, as well as electric guitars, so when I got my hands on this thing I knew I wasn’t going to get anything shoddy in return

The Baby Taylor BT2 features a solid Mahogany top, 3/4 Size Dreadnought, Sapele Back and Sides, an Ebony Fretboard with a 22 and 3/4 scale with 19 frets, Enclosed, Die Cast Chrome Plated tuning heads, an adjustable truss, and a black gig bag. It plays smooth and comfortable, making it easy for someone just learning or for someone who has some experience with the instrument.

Baby Taylor is only three quarters the size of a regular acoustic guitar, which makes it absolutely perfect for someone who is traveling, for a younger player, or for someone that just doesn’t like large bulky acoustic guitars. The size also surprisingly doesn’t seem to take away from its very full tone, which was very interesting to me. Though I don’t build guitars for a living either, so I stake no claim as to its craftsmanship.

The sound is very full and lush, not tinny or dry, like a lot of other brands that are in this price range and lower. The Mahogany produces a very clear and mid saturated tone which is very warm to the ears. The laminate back and sides really help the tone resonate, as well, which really puts this guitar into a class of its own without a doubt. Do not be fooled by its small size, the Baby Taylor will measure to up to any full size instrument of similar quality.

The only thing I didn’t like about it was the price, but in comparing a lot of other instruments around the same price range, I came to find that indeed this instrument measures beyond the others in terms of quality, playability, and tone, without being overly expensive. All in all it is worth the money I would say, though if you were looking to get a child into playing guitar I would definitely recommend a cheaper acoustic guitar to start with.

I wanted a solid acoustic guitar to learn on and I wasn’t sure how well I’d take to the instrument – I’ve played a few instruments in the past, but never took the time to really learn the guitar. I love the sound of the Epiphone DR-100 acoustic guitar, and this one for the low price was a surprise – the sound is incredible and I’ve enjoyed learning the basics here. Being able to learn slowly and coax the sound from the strings has been a painstaking process, but I’m finally seeing the results.

A friend of mine, the guy that got me started on the guitar did notice a little buzzing, but it’s very minimal and doesn’t affect the overall tone and quality of the sound this Epiphone acoustic guitar has been able to produce. Since I’m new to acoustic guitar, I didn’t notice the buzzing, but after he pointed it out and I really listened for it, I could pick it out, but most people wouldn’t even notice it.

When I told my buddy how much I paid for this, he was stunned – he honestly had thought I paid three to four times as much. He knows I’m always looking for a bargain and even he was surprised at the good deal I score on this beauty.

This Epiphone acoustic guitar has such a good feel – a good vibe to it, it’s just a good way to chill out after a long day, being able to sit outside and enjoy the cool breeze and play my guitar, it’s given me a little something extra to look forward to at the end of the day. I’m one of those people who are constantly learning new things and because I have so many hobbies and interests, it’s hard to nail down my favorite, but playing this guitar is quickly becoming what I really love to do.

I may not have a huge amount of talent, but being able to indulge my creative passion and being able to challenge myself to learn something new has been good. What I love best about the Epiphone acoustic guitar has to be the note clarity – the sound is fairly clean and a little crisp – it makes it easier on a beginner to learn how to play and develop their style – I know it’s been so much fun learning on this DR-100 guitar and being able to get such a deal was fantastic, I didn’t realize what a good deal it was until my buddy told me. I love the black and gold tones of these Ernesto Palla strings, I play classical guitar and the bluesy sound I get from the nylon strings is perfect – works well every time. I like how stiff the strings are, as a intermediate player, it gives me great control over the sound than some of the other classical strings I’ve tried, and since I’m still working on my sound and learning, I didn’t want to invest a lot in a top-quality set of strings, for my needs and budget, these strings work out very well.

Ernesto Palla strings have the ball end, so it is a good fit for someone who isn’t as adept at replacing their guitar strings. I like how clear and crisp the sound is when I use these and while they don’t produce nearly the volume of some strings, I found it great because I’d prefer to control the volume more and produce a more intimate, bluesy sound and of all the classical guitar strings I’ve used, these give me that elusive tone I was looking for.

With the old guitar my grandfather gave me, it’s been a treat learning how to play and remembering that lonesome twang he was able to produce. Since I’ve switched to these classical guitar strings, I feel like I’m getting closer to the sound my granddad used to make and it’s been a real blast, especially these last few nights, being able to sit outside or just kick back on my couch and play. Every set of nylon strings gives you a different kind of sound, it’s true, but I just love the slightly muted sounds I get from these strings, it really is amazing and they’ve made an amazing difference in the way I play.

The strongest selling points of Ernesto Palla strings would have start with the sound – kind of low and bluesy, not too loud, and a little bit crisp and clean when you need it. It’s an unusual blend of folk, country, and blues if you play them right. Second thing, I have to admit, is what a value these are. I’ve paid a lot more money for classical guitar strings I wasn’t nearly as happy with. Sad, but true. In this economy, you have to factor in value and for the money, I have not found nylon strings that work as well for me. Last selling point for these – you get a great look with your classic guitar – the black and gold colors of the strings look as good as they sound.

A very snug fit for my guitar, the Snark Tuner is a solid, dependable guitar tuner. I had my buddy give it a try and he had just as good of results as I have had over the past couple months of using it. Sometimes it’s hard for me to hear the slight flat tone my guitar often produces, but having a tuner that’s so easy to work with and accurate makes it a lot easier on someone like me, that doesn’t have the gift of finding the perfect pitch on the first try.

The Snark tuner has an easy to read digital readout, even works in bright natural light. I like to play outside on the beach when I head out camping with my friends and it works well, even in some of the humid climates we’ve camped in. Finding a pinpoint accurate guitar tuner isn’t easy and when I found this one, I was blown away, not just buy the good feedback it has, but for the price, I’m very pleased with the value.

The visual metronome feature is nice, I’ve used it when I’m teaching my nephew how to play and tune and the visual is a huge help to beginners, I’m trying to teach him to understand the basic principles and for the price, I’ve already bought one of the guitar tuners for him for his last birthday – a gift that he’s put to good use and appreciated, for a change. I like how simple the design is – it’s very basic, but has everything you need to tune your guitar properly.

Another very good point of the Snark tuner – it’s more than a chromatic tuner, it tunes well from any note, responds immediately to any pitch change and it’s pitch indication is crystal clear. I’ve used a few other guitar tuners in my day, but for the pure functionality of the device, this one is the most solid and reliable one I’ve found on the market – at a low to mid price range. Since many of the guitar tuners I’ve used in the past have been somewhat tempermental, I’ve learned not to shell out too much money, in case they don’t like up to their hype.

I had never try Dean Markley strings before and out of curiosity, I decided to give it a shot on these Cryogenic processed Blue Steel strings. Seriously, I didn’t put too much of expectation but to my surprise, these strings turned out to be pretty good!

At my first impression, DM Blue Steel Acoustic Strings produced bright and mellow sound. They are easy to install and the action is gentle on my fingertips. This is very useful if you are a guitar beginner with no callouses on your fingers. They are light and sound very nice with fingerpicking style. And these strings also hold a tune very well and stay in tune after playing. They did last quite a while if compare to my other D’Addario or GHS strings.

When learning to play the guitar there are very few teachers who are going to tell you the benefits of having the right strings to go with it, which is a pity as the Martin m130 may just make the difference that you – and your neighbors – have been waiting to hear.

Have you ever picked up your guitar and wondered why the sound coming out of it bared little to no resemblance to the Jimi Hendrix riff that you’re trying to play? Some people may say that it’s down to a lack of practice, a lack of skill, or even a lack of any sort of musical ability, but that’s not always the case; sometimes you just need the right equipment to get the right sounds coming out, and that’s where switching to silk and steel strings has helped many people out.

Refusing to believe that I wasn’t going to be the next Chuck Berry – and clearly giving my age away – I would practice for ages on my old four string guitar, but nothing really helped. It wasn’t until some years later that I discover that it should actually have six strings, and that the strings I did have weren’t all that good for a beginner – that and the previously mentioned lack of any musical talent. I started to look around for a full set of strings that would be easier to play, wouldn’t have a dull sound to them, wouldn’t sound as twangy, and would make me sound like a rock-star; well, the first three things would do, for a start.

I soon discovered that many people were recommending switching to the Martin guitar strings, and the Martin m130 silk and steel strings in particular. I thought ‘what the hell’, they were cheap enough, and the neighbors couldn’t be any more upset with me than they already were, so I decided to get a set.

Now, the Martin m130 silk and steel strings seem to work on most guitars, but it may still pay to check that they work with your guitar, and they wouldn’t instantly make you sound like the next Carlos Santana, but they were pretty much the only ‘drawbacks’ that I could see when I was doing my research in to them; but hey, you could say the same thing about any strings that you settle on getting, not just the Martin guitar strings.

As far as it making a difference to my actual playing, well, I always thought I was good, so you’d really have to ask the neighbors. The Martin m130 strings did seem to have a better feel to them, were easier to use with just my fingers, and produced the type of sound that I was aiming for, a more sort of melodic sound; having a full complement of strings also made a bit of a difference, but I was still just using the same three chords anyway.

So, will Martin m130 silk and steel strings make you in to the next Eric Clapton? Well, that all sort of depends on the commitment you put in to your practice, the talent that you have to start with, and getting the correct number of string for your guitar; but switching from what you already have, to the Martin guitar strings, and especially the Martin m130 silk and steel strings, is going to make a difference no matter what your current level and ability is – take it from me, the new Slash. Elixir acoustic guitar strings are the best-made strings I have ever played on. After burning through strings on my Taylor GA, I decided I had to try something new. Most acoustic guitar strings fall out of tune easily, sound tinny and artificial when you first put them on, and then just after they start feeling comfortable and sounding warm, they begin to rust, or the coating starts to fray around the soundhole.

I was beginning to get used to the idea of putting up with these facts for the rest of my guitar-playing life, and then I decided to give Elixir strings a try. These guitar strings sound wonderful from the get-go, so they’re especially great to have if you break a string halfway through a set, and they retain their vibrant sound for ages. I do think they sound best after a couple days of breaking them in though, like most strings.

Elixir uses a nanoweb coating on some of their acoustic strings, a super thin coating which makes them feel and sound like uncoated strings. They also tend to last longer than polyweb coated strings. In my opinion, nanowebs feel better on the fingers, and make playing far smoother and easier. Elixir makes their nanoweb strings without sacrificing tone, and that’s something that is hard to find.

The tone of these Nanoweb strings is crisp and rich, and differs with the type of acoustic string. For instance, the nanowebs give a brighter sound, while the phosphor bronze strings have a deeper tone to them. I like to alter the strings based on the type of music I’m playing—bluegrass vs. blues or jazz, for instance. I’ll want the brighter sound for bluegrass, and deeper for jazz. All of Elixir’s strings have that same wonderful playability and rich tone though, so there’s a pack of strings to suit anyone!

One of my pet peeves is guitar strings that won’t hold a tune. Few things are as annoying as playing a gig, and gradually falling out of tune with the rest of the band. Luckily, these particular guitar strings hold their tune longer than most others I’ve played with. That, if for no other reason, makes Elixir strings worth buying.

Elixir has excellent customer service, too. If there’s ever a problem with a pack of strings, or even a single string within a pack, if you let them know, they’ll send you a whole new pack! The company knows they have high-quality strings, so they have no qualms about making sure their customers are satisfied.

Now that I’ve tried Elixir strings, I won’t be buying any other kind. They’re the best deal I could hope for, for the price. They are a little more expensive than some other brands, but the fact that they last more than twice as long, not to mention that they play and sound better, seals the deal for me. Not much to say here. Strings are a very personal thing to a guitar player. You need to try different gauges and brands till you find the ones that work best for you and your style. These are the string of choice for my acoustic and have been for many many years. I replace my strings about once a month with casual play and proper maintenance so why run to the store or pay for shipping 10 times a year. What would you do if you want to clean the dust off of your guitar strings without removing the strings? Use a dry or damp cotton t-shirt and run it up and down?

I used to take a thin cotton cloth and wipe the guitar strings up and down, and slide the thin cloth under the strings as well to remove the dirt as best as I could. But I found it is tough for me to clean my guitar strings completely because there are still some dust under the strings and other areas which I’m not able to get rid of. But when I got it out of the box and realized that not only could I get amazing quality stereo recordings from the built in mics (blew my friends minds when I handed them my headphones) but I could also record 4 track surround sound, because there are actually four mics in this thing, all angled for optimum imaging.

So I sat down and started reading the manual, only to be amazed that not only does this thing record, but it has multiple compressor and limited options, built in metronome and guitar tuner, ability to do all kinds of editing with your files like normalizing, dividing tracks, changing encoding formats, easy dump to computer and back to H2 via USB. The line in stereo recorder works amazingly… I recorded our band from my monitor mix and it actually sounded better than our album!

The only drawback, for me, is that I find the display a little hard to see. But I have some vision trouble to begin with, so you may not encounter this problem. The metronome is a device that has long been used by musicians to ensure that they are playing at a steady tempo, and is very often used as a learning tool for those who are just learning to play. The old style metronomes were of a pyramid shape, and had a ticker that would move from side to side whilst keeping the beats per minute (BPM) at a steady pace. It’s a tool that been around for centuries, but it has been given a modern twist with the introduction of the Korg TM-40 Digital Tuner and Metronome.

While we understand individual player may have personal preference in strings selection, but in general, there are two type of guitar strings we would highly recommended to all beginners.

The first beginner friendly string you may try is D’addario EJ16 Light. These phosphor bronze strings always produce nice and sweet tone. Their price is very reasonable with the quality they delivered. For gauge selection, always choose the light gauge. Although the lighter the string is, the easier your finger to press, but extra light gauge will normally break easily. So choose the light gauge, instead of the extra light would be more ideal.

Another beginner friendly string you can consider is Elixir Nanoweb Light. These strings may not be the cheapest in store, but they are the toughest you could get. Elixir’s strings durability is definitely unquestionable. They are as tough as stone!

I found the sweats from my hands seem to be very acidic as I tend to wear out guitar strings rather quickly. I put on a new set of strings and play my guitar for about 2 hours. I can see rust forming and strings started to discoloring. This is very annoying. Is there any way to make it a little more manageable?

Everybody has different body chemistry. Some people has sweaty palm and their hand will corrode a set of strings within a week of playing. This is because they having the so called ‘Acid Hand’. You may try the below tricks:

1. Use coated strings. Most acid hands kill un-coated string pretty fast if compare to coated one. You may try Elixir Polyweb Coating which has been highly recommended to guitarist who has acid hand.
2. Wash your hands with soap before you play.
3. Use guitar string lubricant to prolong your strings life. Spray it on clean cloth and rub the strings down before and after you play.

I had been told by one of an experience guitar player I shall not remove all guitar strings at once. I should remove one string at a time and replace each as I go. The reason is by removing all strings at once, I will affect the tension and create harm to the guitar neck. Is it true?

Yes, I heard about this as well but personally I do not agree with it because there’s no documented negative effect of removing all strings. I don’t think doing this will damage your guitar neck.

I always remove all strings from the guitar so that I could easily clean and wipe down the fingerboard with micro fiber, follow by putting on the new set. This had actually save lot of my time and effort.

This string winder is very well designed. It is larger than other ordinary peg winder and more comfortable to hold. The pin puller works smoothly without harming your guitar. Learning acoustic guitar is a process which is full of fun. Beside strumming and other playing tricks, you can also try different type of strings and discover which string sounds the best for you. One of a very important step before you start your learning journey is to make sure your guitar is properly ‘setup’. This could be done by sending it to music store and get the staffs there to help you out. In general, setup a guitar will cost you around $50. After setup done, your guitar had been adjusted and you will find it easier to play.

Wrap Wires

Guitar strings have a steel core. The bottom 4 strings are “wound” with a wrap wire. For acoustic strings, the wrap wires are normally phosphor bronze or 80/20 bronze (which is actually brass). Phosphor bronze has a brighter and prettier tone, but it tend to be slightly fuzzy. 80/20 bronze is initially brighter but then will mellow in a day or two. Phosphor bronze will mellow also, but not quite as much. Strings wound with pure nickel normally used on electric guitars, but they will make an overly-bright guitar sound quite mellow and good. Similarly, nickel-plated steel can sound very good on an acoustic guitar. That is what Tony Rice uses, and he’s a great guitarist. There are also strings which have an 85/15 formulation. These strings are very mellow sounding and are good for an overly-bright guitar. Lastly, Rohrbacher makes Titanium strings, wound with either phosphor bronze, nickel or coated bronze wire. These strings will last longer than steel, since Titanium is non-corrosive. They are a bit pricey (in the $20.00 per set range) but will last a year or more. They have a slightly softer, sweeter sound than steel strings.

Coated Strings

In general, all string makers have a line of own ‘coated’ strings. These strings have been either dipped or sprayed with a fine coating of polymer that protects the string. However, the coating dampens the sound of the string and the guitar. If your hands perspire a lot, you can use coated strings or the Rohrbacher Titaniums. But if your hands always stay dry, then coated strings are not necessary. They cost a lot more and really do not sound as good as uncoated strings. To me, coated strings are just meant to be made for those people with sweaty palm. Strings Gauges

Guitar strings come in various gauges (thicknesses or diameter). A 56 gauge string is thicker than a 54 gauge string. Generally, the most common gauges for acoustic strings are Extra-light (11-47), Light (12-54) and medium (13-56). Do note different string makers may have slightly different string gauges for their products. If you have a dreadnought guitar, I recommend medium strings. Why? Because medium strings have a greater tension than Lights or Extra-Lights, and will transfer more sound to the top, or soundboard, of the guitar. This is recommended for a new guitar, especially, because the top is tight and needs to be “played in.” However, medium gauge strings are harder to finger than Lights or Extra-Lights. Therefore, I only recommend medium gauge to beginner who can take the pain on their fingers. If this is tough for you, then go for light or extra light gauges. Smaller guitars, such as parlor guitars, O, OO or OOO models will do well with Light gauge strings.

String brands

D’Addario is the most famous brand and their strings are very good. D’Addario also makes other brands such as John Pearse and Dean Markley (a not-very-well guarded industry secret). Elixir is another trusted brand in America. These strings are very durable. Acoustic guitar strings are made of different material with different alloy ratios. The alloy ratio we mentioned here is referring to the metals which makeup the string.

80/20 strings is also known as Bronze Strings. Their copper-to-tin (or zinc) ratio is 80/20. They produce bright sound with clear & ringing tone. This type of strings required less tension and will give you a softer feel.

Phosphor Bronze strings are made of 92% copper and 8% tin (or zinc). They are more corrosive-resistant and tend to last longer than 80/20 strings. These produce a brassier sound but stiffer on your fingers.

We all know Ernie Ball makes top notch electric guitar strings. But what about acoustic strings? To my surprise, I find they sound pretty good too. I tested Ernie Ball Earthwood 2003 on my Gibson and I’m actually quite like them. These Ernie Ball strings sound clean, resonant and lasting.

Other than clean tone, another thing makes Ernie Ball Earthwood Strings attractive is the price. They are cheap, but give you good and crisp tone. Unlike those “high-end” strings which cost you twice or even 3 times of the price (but you couldn’t tell that they sounded or lasted any better), the price of Ernie Ball strings are very reasonable. And I found they sound great for fingerstyle playing.

Generally, Elixir acoustic strings come in 3 major types: Polyweb 80/20, Nanoweb 80/20 and Nanoweb Phosphor Bronze. I opted for Elixir Nanoweb 80/20 after being told by a friend that Polywebs are a bit dull in tone and that Nanoweb coating is not as thick as the Polyweb. You will get a brighter tone, and the coating doesn’t peel like the Polyweb.

So I put these strings on my Yammy. I found that they sound great and lively! The Nanoweb coating is so thin that it feels no different from playing an uncoated string. My guitar sounds beautiful; the tones are soft and bright. It is simply amazing!

Another great feature of Elixir Nanoweb strings is their consistency. They sound great when you first play them. And they still sound that good months later! I got my D’Addario EJ16 through Amazon with their bundled pack of three. I have no reason to complain, because these strings sound great, and I got them for a steal— almost 50% off! I have a habit of changing my guitar strings frequently to keep the tone right, so this value-pack (three sets) suits me nicely.

I like the sound of my new strings. But oddly, the strings turn colors very quickly— after just a few hours of practice. May be I should blame it on my acidic fingers. Anyway, it’s okay, because the more I play my D’Addario EJ16 strings, the mellower the tone becomes. I love mellow sounds, so these strings are great for me. If you find that these strings sound too bright, give them a few days to settle in. The EJ16 will develop a very nice warm sound after couple of days.

One thing I really like about D’Addario EJ16 is the color code on the ball ends. These make it much easier when I do the restringing. I don’t have to worry about mixing my strings accidentally, and have no trouble identifying which string is which. Another advantage is the packaging: unlike other brands that keep their strings inside a normal paper envelope, D’Addario protects their strings with a corrosion-proof sealed bag.

I have strung literally thousands of guitars over my 40 years of repairing stringed instruments. D’Addario EJ16s are IMHO the best string money can buy- it is the standard of the industry for good reason… they’re simply the best string available! D’Addario’s corrosion-proof sealed bags ensure you get them as fresh as when they left the factory. Lower grade junky stings are shipped in simple paper envelopes and allow the strings to oxidize just sitting on the shelf or in your case. Wipe your guitar strings

This is very important for maintenance. Wipe down your guitar strings with a soft and dry cloth each time you finish your practicing. What you need to do is simply put the cloth in between the strings and the fingerboard. Run it all the way down the length of the neck of the guitar. Get rid of all the perspiration and rust.

What type of guitar string size should I choose? How do they affect the guitar?

Restringing acoustic guitars is part of your learning process, and it’s essential for guitar maintenance.

Acoustic guitar strings consist of many type of gauges & brands. Guitar newbie often get confused as to what type of strings and brand to buy for his guitar. A very common question pop up in newbie’s mind is which is the best acoustic guitar strings brand for me?

As what we have learned from previous article, there are four main gauge options for Acoustic Guitar:

• Extra light 10 – 46. Easiest to play and least tension. Good for beginners but prone to producing a thin sound.
  

• Custom Light Gauge 11 – 52. Ease of playing maintained and produces slightly richer fuller sound.
  

• Light Gauge 12 – 54. Popular with professional musicians. Higher tuning stability. Not recommended for budget guitar due to higher tension.
  

• Medium Gauge 13 – 56. One of the highest gauges. Very big, rich tone but difficult to play on some guitars due to high tension.
  

For a guitar beginner, there are suggestions to opt for lighter strings because it’s easier to press down and simple to play. However there’s no “The Best Brand” in the market. Choosing a certain brand is more on personal preference.

Personally, I would prefer Elixir’s extra light strings because it is easier to press and last pretty long. Sometimes after you changed to light gauge strings, you still find it’s difficult to press the strings down. You might want to take your guitar to shops and have it checked. Your guitar “action” (height of strings off the fingerboard) might be a bit too high. This problem can be solved by getting guitar repair shop to lower the action for you.

Composition

Guitar strings made from material like nickel, stainless, bronze, phosphor bronze, etc. Acoustic guitar use steel strings and classical use nylon. Electric guitars usually use steel strings too. In this article, we will review steel strings instead of nylon, since they are the most common used.

Guitar strings types could also be classified as wound & unwound strings.

a. Wound Strings: A thinner wire wrap with a steel core (usually bronze, nickel or steel). Wound strings are thick and strong. It normally used for the lower registers.

b. Unwound Strings: Unwound strings (also known as standard strings) are generally used for the upper registers. It’s thinner with a higher pitch.

Different type of string and wrapping metals will affect the sound of the string. Bronze is usually considered to have a ‘bright’ sound, which steel is more mellow & softer, especially when wrapped in nickel.

How the string is wrapped could also impact the sound. Although ‘Rround wound’ strings are loud and vibrant, it can be hard on the neck of your guitar and produce noise when sliding your fingers over them. ‘Flat wound’ strings are not as crisp sounding and are easier on frets and fingers.

Gauge

Next, we look at the gauge of the string, ie the thickness or diameter. There are 4 main gauges for Acoustic Guitar strings:

Thicker strings sound louder, but they are also under more tension to maintain the required pitch. This can make them hard to play, as the pressure required to push the string down behind the fret is considerable.

To avoid buzzing against the frets, thicker strings usually have to be mounted a bit higher off the soundboard than thin strings. This may slow down the “action” of the instrument, making it more difficult to play quickly.

Brand

So which brand to choose? That is up to your own preference & budget. Each brand has its own solid characteristics, but what works for one person might not sound right to another. The best thing you can do is buy 2 or 3 packs of strings from different makers. Test it and see which one sounds the best to you.

One thing for sure is, choosing appropriate strings will aid technique, enhance quality and improve confidence of the guitar player.
